The Pale of Settlement
The Pale of Settlement
Mondays, 30 January, 6, 13, 20, 27 February & 13 March, 19:30-20:45 on Zoom
The Pale of Settlement is a very important part of our Jewish history. The Pale was the biggest Jewish Ghetto in the history of humanity, which existed for 126 years, and made a profound impact on both Jewish and the world’s history at the time. Many Jewish families around the world trace their roots back to the Pale. With Rabbi Tanya.
In our last session, we will talk about the reign of Nicholas II, the last Tzar of Russia and how his personality and policies influenced the course of Russian history. We will look at the history of the Pale around the time of the first revolution and the changes it brought to the minds and attitudes of the Jewish community and Jewish proletariat in particular. We will discuss two strands of Zionism: “assimilationist” and “immigrationist”. We will talk about religious, secular and social Zionism on the territory of the Pale and will look into the history of the Bund and its very important role in the history of the Russian Jewish proletariat. We will address the issues our ancestors faced between the two revolutions and will finish with the end of the Pale de facto and de Jure.
