Stonegrove Serenade welcomes The El Chamuyo Quartet
The El Chamuyo Quartet performs a wide sweep of Argentinian tango music, ranging from golden era of the 1920s and ’30s, through to the tango nuevo masterpieces of Piazzolla, and on to a few contemporary composers. While respecting the tradition, El Chamuyo also takes this repertoire as a starting point for improvisation, blurring the boundaries between tango and jazz in exciting and innovative ways. Not forgetting that this music is rooted in dance, the quartet regularly performs at milongas for tango dancers. The group recently appeared in Jamboree, Jazz Cafe POSK (London), Bracknell Jazz, Guildford Jazz Festival. Featuring virtuoso violinist Kamila Bydlowska, jazz pianist Adam Dyer, Simon Cook on chromatic bandoneon and Juampi Mauro on double bass.
Kamila Bydlowska has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across Europe, Asia, and America, including the Royal Albert Hall, Jazz Cafe, and KIOI Hall in Tokyo. She made world-first recordings of Violin Concertos by British composers William Wordsworth and Arnold Griller with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, released in 2019 and 2021. Kamila has also performed works by Bruch, Sibelius, Bartok, and Szymanowski. She has been featured on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and WNYC, among others, and has won numerous awards, including the Ministry of Culture of Poland Scholarship. Kamila began playing the violin at seven and studied at Indiana University and the Royal College of Music in London.
Adam Dyer is a jazz pianist who studied in Cambridge, at the Guildhall, and in Scandinavia on a jazz scholarship. He has performed with artists such as Bobby Wellins, Dan Berglund, and Gregory Porter. Adam directs ensembles and teaches composition at Morley College, hosts a jazz radio show on Phoenix FM, and has worked with Bill Laurence (Snarky Puppy) as an arranger for the Morley College Big Band.
Simon Cook is a well-known figure in the jazz scene, serving as a house pianist and organizer. During lockdown, he studied free bass accordion with Karen Street, which led him to explore the chromatic bandoneon and perform in several tango ensembles.
Juampi Mauro is an Argentine bass player based in London, performing with various jazz, tango, and folk bands. He ensures that El Chamuyo stays grounded not only in the right chords but also in the authentic traditions of tango music.
